The Maharashtra BJP Monday started its ‘Jagar Yatra’ from Sevagram in the Wardha district to reach out to Other Backward Classes (OBC) in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule is leading the march that will cover all eleven districts of the Vidarbha region in the first phase. It will conclude at Poharadevi in the Washim district. In the first phase, the march will crisscross through all OBC dominant constituencies in the cotton belt of Vidarbha, covering 10 Lok Sabha seats and 62 Assembly seats.
Bawankule said, “The purpose of the yatra is to reach out to people in Vidarbha. The Centre and the state government have enforced several welfare schemes and programmes to uplift OBCs. We will inform people about the good work of the government.”
The yatra comes at a time when Maharashtra is confronting the Maratha versus OBC conflict over reservations. This has led to unrest and both sides have launched protests. Through yatra and rallies, the state BJP leaders are trying to reach out to its core OBC voters.
A senior party functionary overseeing the yatra said, “The purpose of the yatra is confidence building amongst OBC communities which has been the traditional vote base for the BJP’s electoral success.”
The yatra will also pass through constituencies represented by established OBC leaders of Opposition parties, such as Vijay Waddetiwar of the Congress and Anil Deshmukh (of the NCP).
