Amid the city gearing up for the arrival of monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that heavy showers are on the cards for the bay from Sunday (today) while an orange alert stating the likelihood of heavy showers has been sounded for Thane and Raigad districts on June 11. Having already entered Maharashtra, senior IMD scientists have indicated that conditions are favourable for southwest monsoon to arrive in Mumbai in two days.
On Saturday, amid a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning, several pockets of the city and its suburbs experienced light showers and cloudy skies. According to the IMD forecast for the upcoming week, the intensity of showers in Mumbai is set to increase from today(Sunday) for which the weather bureau issued a yellow warning for heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds at the speed of 50-60 kmph and thunderstorms.
In the neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad, meanwhile, an orange alert stating possibility of heavy to very heavy downpour has been sounded from June 11.
According to senior scientists from IMD Mumbai, depending on the intensity of the conditions, the onset of monsoon is likely to be announced between June 11 and 12.
“Currently, Mumbai is experiencing rain owing to the pre-monsoon conditions. However, conditions are very favourable for the arrival of monsoon in the city over the next 48 hours. We will be monitoring the developments and depending on the intensity of showers, we are likely to announce the onset of monsoon around June 11 – 12,” said an IMD Mumbai official. For the record, typically, the official date of monsoon onset in Mumbai falls between June 10 and June 15.
Meanwhile, amid cloudy conditions, the maximum temperatures in the suburbs as well as the island city division hovered between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius.
