Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Mumbai are facing an unprecedented attack by hackers which has reduced surfing speeds in the city.

The Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack on ISPs was being carried out in an “unprecedented” manner, IGP (cyber crime) Brijesh Singh told The Indian Express on Saturday.

“We are still examining it. It is unprecedented because the attack is being carried out at 200 gigabytes per second,” he said. Singh, however, refused to divulge the number of affected ISPs.

A DDOS attack involves an attempt by hackers to prevent legitimate users of a service from using that service by either flooding or crashing it.

In a statement issued to its users, one of the leading service providers, Hathway said, “Dear users due to International hacker attack on major Indian ISPs N/w, we are facing big issue of slow speed and fluctuation of line. Kindly bare with us as we are trying to solve this problem in very short period with the help of high skilled technicians. please be with us and let’s fight against these hackers (sic).”

Meanwhile, service users took to social media to vent their ire over the breakdown in service.

“Forget home scale, something like this happening in the financial capital of India is scary,” Anuj G posted on Twitter.
