Nearly four days after a five-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the local police registered an FIR against the swimming pool coach and lifeguard. While no arrests have been made, the police said they are in the process of recording statements of the family members of the girl and those present at the swimming pool when the incident took place.

Senior Inspector of the Trombay police, Prakash Salvi, said: “We have registered an FIR on the charge of causing death due to negligence against the swimming pool coach and life guard based on the complaint we have received. We are investigating the matter and have not made any arrests as yet.” The family members of the girl had been demanding action against the coach and life guards who were present at the pool when the incident took place.

The girl, Anushka Kumar, had gone to the swimming pool along with her elder sister on Thursday around 4 pm. Her father Neeraj Kumar, scientific officer with the BARC, said that since the swimming drums did not have ropes, the girl entered the pool without it. Kumar had further alleged that even though the swimming coach and the guard were present there, they did not pay attention to the plight of the girl. By the time she was rushed to the hospital, she was declared dead by the doctors.

Soon after the incident, the family members sought an FIR against the coach and life guards. An officer said: “Depending upon the evidence we gather, we will decide whether they need to be arrested. As of now, we are more interested in getting statements of those present at the spot to gather strong evidence against the accused.”
