Bringing respite from the heat, several pockets of Mumbai city and its suburbs experienced the first spell of monsoon showers on Saturday morning. On Thursday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast that the monsoon would arrive in the city in the upcoming weekend.
According to meteorologists, the intensity of rainfall is slated to increase over the course of the next week, with the IMD sounding yellow alert, indicating heavy spells of rain, in Mumbai as well as its neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar for Monday (June 26) and Tuesday (June 27). The IMD has also predicted a fall in the temperatures over the next seven days. According to the weather agency’s seven days forecast, the temperature is expected to fall by four degrees.
On Friday, several parts of the city witnessed light spells of pre-monsoon showers. While the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded 12 mm of rainfall, the observatory at Colaba registered a rainfall of 0.2 mm.
In its bulletin released Friday, the IMD sounded yellow alerts in all districts of Maharashtra for the next five days. Meanwhile, for several districts of Vidarbha region, which had been grappling with extreme heat with the IMD issuing heatwave warnings until Thursday, the weather department Friday issued an orange warning implying heavy to very heavy rainfall coupled with thunderstorms and lightning.
