Five firemen were injured during a firefighting operation at Star Mall in Dadar on Friday evening. The blaze, reported around 3.51 pm, broke out in the kitchen of a McDonald’s outlet located inside the mall, which stands opposite Sena Bhavan.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster cell, the fire was classified as a Level 1 (minor) blaze.

“The blaze must have broken out following a gas leakage or from a spark that originated from one of the ovens. The presence of combustible items like cooking oil intensified the blaze, however the presence of fire prevention system averted the situation from getting escalated,” said an official from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB).

Fire officials said smoke engulfed the mall’s interiors, leading to several people inhaling thick fumes.

“All the five firemen who were injured inhaled the smoke and became senseless, later they were brought out. The overall premises were evacuated beforehand and common citizens were not present,” the official added.

The injured have been identified as Kapil Dhamare (26), Harisha Narkar (45), Pravin Pawar (32), Sanju Padvi (29) and Sudarshan Ahire (33). Dhamare, Pawar and Padvi are firemen, Narkar is a senior station officer, and Ahire a contractual staffer. All were taken to KEM Hospital and are currently stable.

The fire was brought under control around 6.10 pm after more than two hours of operations.
