Vanrai police in Goregaon arrested a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel on Thursday for allegedly driving an SUV under the influence of alcohol and crashing his vehicle into an auto-rickshaw on Western Express Highway in which a woman was killed and her two daughters and the auto driver were seriously injured. The police have charged the CISF personnel with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The deceased woman has been identified as Jogeshwari resident Hazra Shaikh, who was heading to Goregaon (where they temporarily reside) in the early hours of Thursday with her two daughters Shaheen (22) and Shirin (17) in an auto-rickshaw after celebrating Eid at a relative’s place in south Mumbai. Shaikh’s husband was sitting in another auto-rickshaw with their third and youngest daughter.
According to Vanrai police, the accused CISF driver Dhondiram Yadav, was driving a Scorpio service vehicle on the south bound stretch when he lost control of it and jumped over the divider to crash into the auto-rickshaw on the flyover in Goregaon East. The Scorpio had “POLICE” written on the windshield.
Shaikh’s husband, who was traveling in another auto-rickshaw, rushed the injured wife and daughters to Trauma Care hospital, Jogeshwari.
Shaikh and the auto driver sustained serious injuries. Later Shaikh died at the hospital while the driver was undergoing treatment. Shaikh’s two injured daughters are stable.
“Yadav’s blood test report confirmed he was under the influence of alcohol, hence we arrested him under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder among other charges,” said Raju Mane, senior inspector of Vanrai police station.
Yadav picked up the SUV from Malad East, where it had been given for repairs, and was taking the vehicle to CISF camp in Santacruz, when the incident occurred.
Police were checking if there were other CISF personnel with Yadav when the accident took place.
Yadav has been booked under sections 106 (1) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and 185 (drunk driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
