The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted a factory allegedly involved in the illegal production of synthetic drugs and producing Alprazolam and arrested four people, including the masterminds who were providing money to manufacturers, in Gujarat’s Valsad area Wednesday.
The agency said it raided the factory under Operation White Cauldron, which was based on a tip-off, and also seized Alprazolam worth ₹22 crore. During the investigation, the agency learnt that the manufactured Alprazolam was allegedly being supplied to Telangana.
DRI arrested two people directly involved in the manufacturing and financing of Alprazolam, and an employee assisting them in production. The fourth accused is the recipient of the drug, who had come from Telangana to collect them.
Once it was confirmed that the illegal factory was operating in the Valsad area, a sparsely populated region off the Gujarat State Highway, the agency raided the factory. The agency allegedly seized 9.55 kg of Alprazolam (finished form), 104.15 kg of Alprazolam (semi-finished form), and 431 kg of raw materials, including key chemicals such as p-Nitrochlorobenzene, Phosphorus Pentasulfide, Ethyl Acetate, and Hydrochloric Acid, during the raid.
According to DRI officials, the accused were operating the full industrial-scale processing setup, which included reactors, a centrifuge, an industrial refrigeration unit, and a heating mantle.
In August, DRI said it busted a similar Alprazolam manufacturing unit in Atchutapuram in the Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh and seized 119.4 kg of Alprazolam.
Alprazolam is a banned medicine and comes under a psychotropic substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
