A special court on Friday granted bail to seven persons including NCP Sharad Pawar-led faction’s MLA Prajakt Tanpure in connection with the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank (MSCB) scam. They were summoned in December by the court after it took cognizance of the chargesheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate against them and companies linked to them.
The seven in response to the summons were present before the court and sought bail under provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), stating that since their custody was not taken at the time of the investigation, they are not required to be kept in custody now and can be released on bail.
The court granted bail to Prajakt Tanpure, his father Prasad Tanpure, former Congress minister Ranjeet Deshmukh, Subhash Deshmukh, industrialist Sameer Mulay, Arjun Khotkar and construction businessman Jugal Tapadia. They were ordered to be released on payment of a bond of Rs 2 lakh. The court will hear the pleas on behalf of the companies named in the case separately.
While taking cognizance of the case, the court last month had said there was prima facie evidence of the involvement of the accused including in grant of loans to sugar factories despite irregularities.
The court also said there was prima facie evidence that the factories were then auctioned and sold to the companies linked to the accused.
