Services of as many as 52 local trains on the Harbour Line were cancelled causing inconvenience to commuters after a coach of a local train derailed on Monday.
The incident occurred at around 11:43 am after a coach of a Mumbai suburban local train derailed about 50 metres away from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)’s platform number 2.
According to officials, no injuries were reported in the incident and the cause of the derailment is yet to be ascertained.
Services of 26 trains had to be short-terminated till Wadala, before the services resumed at 3 pm.
Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Dr Swapnil Nila told The Indian Express, “Owing to the incident, 52 local trains on the Harbour Line were cancelled, while 26 trains had to be short-terminated till Wadala.”
With the services affected, the Central Railways was running services till Wadala until the repair work was completed.
“Passengers are permitted to travel via the mainline between CSMT and Kurla section in up and down direction. Passengers travelling for Goregaon/Bandra Harbour Line are permitted to travel via DDR Western Line in up and down direction,” the Mumbai division of Central Railway said in a post on X after the incident.
Nearly 2 hours after the incident, the derailed train was re-railed at 1.15 pm with the full fledged services resuming after 3.06 pm.
According to Central Railways, the track fit was received at 3.00 pm, following which the first train left from CSMT for Belapur at 3.06 pm.
The incident left several commuters confused and many deboarded the trains and started walking towards the nearest station, visuals of which have surfaced on social media.
Taking to social media, several passengers complained that their trains were being halted between stations and platforms for long durations.
Meanwhile, responding to questions, CPRO Nila said that the cause of the derailment is yet to be ascertained.
“Following the resumption of the services, we have not faced any issues and disruptions. Meanwhile, the cause of the incident will be identified after a thorough investigation,” the official maintained.
