Mumbai’s first underground metro, Line 3, will have some of the deepest underground railway stations in India. The deepest will be the T2 station, 30m below the surface. While most other stations will be located 22-25m below the ground level, the T1 and Sahar Road stations will be deeper.
On the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro line, 26 of the 27 stations are underground.
Work on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport T2 metro station, which started seven years ago, is 91 per cent ready. It will also house the tallest escalator, of 19.15m, which is equal to an eight-storey building.
Ashwini Bhide, managing director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, said, “T2 is one of the major interchange stations. The station is deeper than other stations, since the off-site development of the airport is to come above it, which made the construction pretty challenging.”
A spokesperson for the corporation said the T2 station would ensure hassle-free connectivity to the airport. “This station will also be connected to the proposed airport station of Metro Line 7A. The Line 7A metro station and the T2 station will be parallel to each other and connected at the concourse level for easy interchange between lines,” said the spokesperson for the project implementing agency.
