In a first, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is set to carry out daily cleaning and maintenance of the 3.5-km long seafront at Worli Koliwada in an attempt to preserve and uplift the heritage of the place.

In the past one year, the civic authorities have taken up multiple initiatives to revive the Koliwadas in Mumbai. A Koliwada is a neighbourhood which houses members of the indigenous Koli community who are primarily fisherfolk. These Koliwadas are located in the coastal parts of Mumbai–some of which include Mahim, Worli and Cuffe Parade. In a similar move, the BMC earlier in Mahim had started a seafood plaza at Mahim seafront.

Speaking to the Indian Express, civic officials maintained that the move of cleaning the Worli Koliwada seafront is being taken up to uplift the beauty of this space.

“This place is mainly used by the local people to park their fishing boats and since most of the people who live here bank on fishing activities, there is a need to keep this place maintained for which a contractor has been appointed,” said an official.

The BMC will spend Rs 1.5 crore annually for the upkeep of this place. The contractor will be responsible for collecting and disposing of floating waste from the water as well as cleaning the entire sea front. The officials also said that odour control mechanisms will be implemented to ensure visitors don’t get any stench from here. The civic officials said that in the next step, the BMC intends to develop the entire sea front into a pathway.

“Prior to this, no comprehensive move was taken by us to maintain the sea fronts. Every now and then, BMC’s garbage collection vans would go to pick up and dispose solid waste. This will be the first time that round-the-clock cleaning of the beaches will be carried out,” the official said.
