After facing much flak for shifting security guards along water pipelines and other water installations to civic hospitals, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clarified that security at water installations was not being compromised. It stated that only additional security personnel stationed at areas not prone to any danger were shifted to hospitals where the need of security personnel is a lot more.

Following the recent stir by resident doctors of government hospitals, demanding better security after an attack on a doctor by a patient’s kin,the BMC had decided to remove guards from along water pipelines and stationed them at hospitals. The move had invited strong criticism from both corporators and municipal unions, who stated that water installations could be an easy terror target.

The BMC has now stated that in addition to adequate number of security guards along pipelines, dams, reservoirs and pumping stations, these places are also being secured by armed men from the Thane police. “These armed personnel are present 24 hours. Only some private guards who were stationed at unimportant locations are being shifted,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Rajeev Jalota.

The civic body had in May 2009 passed a proposal for protection of pipelines, reservoirs and pumping stations and the adjoining land owned by the hydraulic engineering department by constructing compound walls, fencing and developing gardens on the land. The proposal also included surveillance of pipelines by security guards. The contract was awarded to Krystal security firm for carrying out surveillance for two years at a cost of Rs 55 crore.
