Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar on Monday said that the BJP would crush the “green movement” that has been emerging in Malwani.

Malwani, which has a substantial Muslim population, had witnessed violence during Ram Navami celebrations earlier this year.

“BJP will not only pacify Manipur but will also silence this emerging green movement that is coming up in Malwani,” Shelar said in Mumbai on Monday.

Shelar referred to Malwani while criticising Uddhav Thackeray, who had questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inability to visit Manipur which is currently witnessing ethnic clashes.

Shelar claimed that Thackeray, despite staying in Mumbai, has never visited Malwani.

The Malwani area had witnessed communal violence in March this year over playing of music during Ram Navami celebrations outside a mosque. The Mumbai police had apprehended several persons in connection with the incident.

According to the Mumbai police, a fight had allegedly broken out after some people at a mosque asked a procession passing by to stop playing music, which later escalated with slippers and water bottles being thrown by both sides before the police brought the situation under control.
