Republic Party of India faction leader Ramdas Athavale has demanded “nationalisation of land and its redistribution among the landless.”
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Athavale said he would now be concentrating on taking the issue forward.
“I think time has come for nationalisation of the country’s land resources. The government should take it over and re-distribute it among landless farm labourers and the poor at the rate of five acres a family,” Athavale suggested.
The Athavale faction of the RPI, which is part of the six -party grand alliance (Mahayuti) led by BJP-Shiv Sena, said he hoped his party would get at least 14 seats in the coming state Assembly elections. “This is crucial for us to regain the Election Commission recognition,” he said.
He has urged the BJP-Sena to finalise seat sharing-formula at the earliest.
Of the 14 seats RPI is eyeing, most are in Vidarbha and include Nagpur North, Arjuni Morgaon, Washim, Wardha, Katol, Balapur and Badnera among others.
However, there is little chance of the RPI getting more than three to four seats since the Mahayuti has to accommodate more powerful allies – Raju Shetty’s Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, Viyaka Mete-led Shiv Sangram and Mahadeo Jankar-led Rahstriya Samaj Party.
As things stand today, the smaller partners together may get up to 18 seats together. The BJP wants 144 seats, of which it is likely to offer nine to the smaller allies and expects the Sena also to do ditto.
