The crime branch of Mumbai Police detained six Afghan nationals who were allegedly staying in the city using forged documents for the past few years. The six Afghanis had come to India between 2015 and 2019 on medical visa and had since stayed back.
Following the policy used in case of Bangladeshi nationals, the six will be deported to Afghanistan on Tuesday instead of registering FIRs and allowing the case to go to trial which was done earlier, an official said. Of the six, five are from Kabul while one is from Kandahar.
A senior officer said they had received a tip-off about four Afghani nationals staying in Dharavi while two were in south Mumbai. Accordingly, teams from crime branch Unit I and V tracked them down.
“On checking their biometrics, it was confirmed that they were Afghani nationals as details of their original passport showed up,” the official said.
On further probe, the police found that the six had fake documents made under various Indian identities. They had been working here either as money lenders, real estate agents or cloth merchants.
“They had kept their families behind in Afghanistan and came to India to make a better living. Since there was political instability there and lack of jobs, they preferred to remain in India and sent money back home,” the official said.
“Once here, they were quite careful to not land in trouble with the police lest their nationality be exposed. They kept a low profile, did not get married here too in order to keep their Afghani identity a secret,” the official said.
He added that the six have already been sent to Delhi on Monday and on Tuesday they will be flown back to Kabul.
