Two youths from Maratha community allegedly died by suicide in Marathwada region of Maharashtra Thursday stating that they were taking their lives to support the demand for Maratha reservation, police said.
The two deceased were identified as 25-year-old Krishna Kalyankar, from Hingoli district, and Ganesh Kuber, a second-year engineering student in Chaatrapati Sambhajinagar.
The deceased who committed suicide in Hingoli left a purported suicide note behind linking his extreme step to the ongoing stir seeking reservation for the Maratha community in jobs and education.
According to the police, the incident took place around 7 am Thursday when Kalyankar went to his farm and he allegedly hanged himself from a tree.
He was spotted by villagers around 9 am after which the police were informed.
“We have registered an accidental death report in the matter and conducting an inquiry into it,” Sunil Gopinwar, Assistant Police Inspector of Akhada Balapur police station said.
Police said that the engineering student hanged himself at his home and left a message on a black board seeking the reservation.
An official said in Marathwada alone at least six Maratha community members have allegedly died by suicide in the past two weeks seeking reservation for the community.
