“Give land and constructed buildings of hospitals, schools and colleges and our management will run the institutes and meet all the running expenses later on.” This was announced by Shankaracharya, head priest of the Kanchi Math who was in the city to inaugurate the Sankara eye hospital in Vipul World.

The Rs 25 crore hospital is a gift from more than 1,000 non-resident Indians (NRIs),the majority of them south Indians,as more than 80 per cent of the funds for the building and equipment of this hospital have been generated by NRIs.

The Shankaracharya said,“Our Trust is already running so many hospitals and educational institutes in south India and we have made people self-employed. So the same can be done in Punjab as well. Our managements will run the schools, hospitals and education will be affordable, meeting all standards.”

Many NRIs have specially come to Ludhiana for the launch of the hospital apart from donating funds.

Dr R V Ramani,MD of the hospital who hails from south India, stated that 80 per cent of the patients would be treated free and many other hospitals are running in India on a similar model. In Punjab industrialist Ranjodh Singh was behind the project.

The management will be running an outreach programme in villages to find the real poor patients. On the occasion,Dakha MLA Manpreet Ayali asked the management to take certificates from village sarpanches to ascertain whether the actual poor are being treated.
