A major fire incident was reported at Venus garments,located on Jalandhar bypass,on Friday. The material lying in the godown of the garment unit was gutted.
It took the fire brigade about 4 hours to douse the flames. Fire officials said that because the godown had man- made fibres,it took long to extinguish the fire. Man-made fibres containing petroleum catch fire fast.
Significantly,the company had no adequate arrangements for fire fighting.
Nearly eight fire tenders were called which were bringing water from a nearby source to douse the flames because the factory did not have enough water inside the unit.
Fire officials said they could not assess the exact loss,though it was estimated to be in lakhs.
So far,the exact cause of fire has not been known.
