A girl student of class VI committed suicide Friday night by hanging herself at her home in Kanpur’s Bajaria police station area. Locals and family members of the girl created ruckus outside the school premises Saturday, alleging she was stripped by senior students while being frisked for possessing a cellphone. A police complaint has been lodged and an inquiry initiated.
Circle Officer, Seesamau area, Shiv Pal Yadav said the family members spotted the 15-year-old’s body hanging from the ceiling fan around 9 pm Friday. Her father then informed the police about the suicide, but did not mention anything about her alleged harassment at the school, he added.
In the morning, the members and the locals reached the school in Nazirabad area and created ruckus protesting and alleging that the girl took the extreme step because she was strip-searched by her seniors in the school.
“We have received the complaint and are conducting an inquiry. If we find the allegations to be true, a case will be registered. We have’nt recovered any cell phone yet,” said Yadav.
Station Officer, Bajaria police station, Deepak Mishra said they have questioned the girl’s classmates about the cell phone as well.
SO, Nazirabad police station, Virendra said some classmates told the police that the girl had told her seniors about finding a cell phone lying on the roadside while coming to school. They (the seniors) had reportedly asked her to switch it off and not bring it to the school, he said.
He added that the victim’s mother told the police that one of her daughter’s classmates had informed them about the alleged harassment by seniors at the school.
