A case was registered against a professor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) after a PhD student accused him of sexually harassing her, police said.

The victim, aged 29, alleged in her complaint that the accused professor, her research supervisor, rejected her PhD pre-submission since she had been rebuffing his sexual advances and overtures.

Though she had submitted her PhD pre-submission six months ago, no comments were given by her supervisor and other faculty members of the department, she said. She alleged that her supervisor told her verbally that her thesis was not worth submission and that he would not sign it. The complainant said she was trying to convince her supervisor to sign the thesis for the last six months but he kept refusing.

Besides, the supervisor was accused of trying to touch her inappropriately and indulging in sexual conversations while checking her work on her laptop.

The research scholar claimed that the accused tried to call her to the department at odd hours and that he declared her work useless and refused thesis submission after it was clear to him (accused) that she would not accept his demands.

She further alleged that she approached the police after she did not get any response from either the AMU vice-chancellor or the registrar whom she had written to about her “ordeal”.

The FIR has been lodged against the professor under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code.

Aligarh Assistant Superintendent of Police Puneet Dwivedi said an investigation is underway in the case and no one has been arrested so far.
