State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar on Monday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu and chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes over an incident wherein four tribal women were allegedly forced to do dandavat parikrama (circumambulation in a prostrate manner) by the ruling Trinamool Congress leaders at South Dinajpur district’s Balurghat as “atonement”.
He wrote in the letter, “On April 6, about 200 people belonging to tribal families from Tapan Assembly constituency of Balurghat Lok Sabha area joined the BJP. This did not go well with a section of the Trinamool leadership. These families were pressured by TMC goons and were forced to join their party.”
The BJP MP from Balurghat added, “Had it been done democratically, we would not have said anything. But inhuman medieval treatment was meted out by forcing them to do dandavat parikrama for about 1km as punishment before handing them over the TMC flag in the party’s district office.” A video of the four tribal women performing dandavat parikrama had gone viral on social media.
The TMC leaders’ mindset towards tribal people is well known from their earlier comments and activities, Majumdar alleged. “But this cannot be tolerated further when the country is leaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is always working for the upliftment of the downtrodden. The intervention of your office is highly solicited to prevent such atrocities against the tribals and women in future,” he said.
The TMC, meanwhile, removed the president of the party’s women wing from South Dinajpur district, Pradipta Chakraborty. In a press statement issued on Sunday, the party also appointed tribal leader Snehalata Hembrom to the post. The party said it did not approve of such conduct and asked its district leadership to be careful in future.
The BJP staged a protest outside the Balurghat police station, demanding an FIR against those responsible for the incident.
Later, party workers led by Sukanta and national vice-president Dilip Ghosh, led a protest rally in Balurghat demanding immediate police action against the culprits.
The TMC slammed the BJP for allegedly spreading “falsehoods” about the incident. “Instead of pointing fingers at us, they should take action against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya for making derogatory statements against women,” said TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh.
