The Calcutta High Court today directed the state to file an affidavit on the death of Sudipta Gupta,an SFI activist who had allegedly died in police custody on April 2. Pranab Gupta, father of Sudipta, filed a writ petition seeking an order for a CBI probe. He alleged in the petition that his son was severely injured in police custody after being tortured by Kolkata Police personnel.

Today advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharjee, counsel of Pranab, pleaded that Sudipta died in police custody but the police did not investigate into the death of the student. The police claimed that the Sudipta died due to an accident but the “post-mortem report said something else”.

Government pleader Ashoke Banerjee said he hit a lamp post as he was hanging out of the door of a bus in which protesting SFI activists were being taken for detention.

The case will come up for hearing on June 14.
