MBBS student ‘rape’ case: Bengal police arrest 3 people after tracking cell phone towers

Within 36 hours of the alleged rape of a second-year MBBS student of a private medical college in West Bengal’s Durgapur, the state police have made three arrests in the case, according to sources in Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate.

The police are yet to make any official statement in the case or reveal the sections. “Three arrests have been made in the case, and they will be produced in the Durgapur court on Sunday, and we will be seeking their remand,” said a senior police officer.

The MBBS student was allegedly dragged outside her college campus in Pashchim Bardhaman district and raped on Friday night, October 10. The survivor was later rushed to the hospital, where her condition is reportedly stable, though she remains deeply traumatised.

According to a source in the police department, search operations were conducted the entire night in the jungle area located behind the college premises. The police used a drone to search the whole jungle premises after the police had tracked the mobile tower location used by one of the accused, and many suspects were detained, the source said.

They said the culprits hailed from the local surrounding villages.

The police are further probing to ascertain if more persons were involved in the incident and if the companion of the victim had any involvement in the crime.

The source said the three men have been booked under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) that pertains to gang rape and Section 3(5) for joint criminal liability.

Meanwhile, late on Saturday Deputy Magistrate Ranjana Ray met with the victim and her family at the hospital. She later told reporters, “It is a very unfortunate incident. The victim and the family has our full cooperation and support. She is ok. We are hopeful that she will be able to lead a normal life once again over here.”

According to police sources, the survivor, who hails from Balasore in Odisha, had gone out of the campus with a male friend when she was allegedly dragged into a jungle located at the backside of the college campus and sexually assaulted.

West Bengal Principal Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam said the matter is under police investigation, and the Director of Medical Education has been asked to submit a detailed report from the college.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the case and has sought an action taken report in five days.
