Two days ahead of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the city, officials of Special Protection Group (SPG) took stock of the Saheed Minar Ground, the rally’s venue. The team, which arrived Saturday night, went for the ground inspection on Sunday around 12 pm.
“No more than 11 people would be allowed on the stage with (Rahul) Gandhi,” SPG officials said, even as the voice of state rail minister Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, through an automated phone call, appealed to the people to attend Gandhi’s rally, scheduled for March 25.
Meanwhile, former state Congress president Pradeep Bhattacharya, at a press conference, said that a section of government employees along with TMC were trying to tamper with the poll process.
“We have come to know that Central forces would not be deputed at all the polling stations. We sense foul play in the entire thing. The DMs sent a report to the chief electoral officer about the law and order situation in their districts, which forwarded the report to the EC and, accordingly, the EC took such a decision. The reports may have been biased. A team of the state Congress would visit the CEC tomorrow and put in a complaint in this regard,” Bhattacharya said.
He held a meeting with the INTUC members and a resolution was taken that the working class be told about the initiatives the Centre has taken.
