Police have taken into custody a 25-year-old driver in connection with the alleged rape of a German tourist in Hyderabad. The woman, 25, was allegedly raped on Monday by a man who offered to show her and her German friend around the city in a car.

“The accused is a driver by profession but not a cab driver. He does not have any criminal cases registered against him in the past in the Rachakonda police limits. He is in custody and his arrest is being recorded,” a police officer told indianexpress.com.

The police said the accused chauffeured the duo along with five others— all minors— in the car and tricked the others into getting down after some time, before speeding away to an isolated location, where he sexually assaulted the woman. He had hired the car for a joyride with friends via the Long Drive Cars app hours before.

The officer clarified that it was not a gang rape. “The accused man managed to drive away with the survivor and rape her,” he said.

According to the police, the survivor and her friend arrived in Hyderabad on March 4 to visit a friend who studied with them in Italy.

According to the officer, around 6.20 pm, a group of people from Yakuthpura, including the accused, who were roaming around in the rented car saw the German nationals. They wished each other and the group enquired where the foreigners were proceeding. The accused, pretending to be a good host, offered to take them around and drop them at places wherever they wanted to go.

“In the car, there were five minor boys who are friends of the accused. All eight of them proceeded further in the car to different locations for a couple of hours, took photos, and had food. At a certain place, the accused asked everyone to get out of the car so that they could go a little ahead to take some photos. Surprisingly, the survivor’s male friend also got down. The accused, with the German woman in the car, drove ahead for about 150 m and sexually assaulted her. It was about 8 pm. After 15-20 minutes, they came back on the same route and the victim got out of the car, seeing her friend. The accused and his friends then fled the scene,” the officer said.
