A 46-year-old woman was crushed to death under the wheels of a garbage truck in New Delhi, after the latter hit the two-wheeler she was travelling on, Wednesday, police said, adding that the truck driver has been arrested.
Police said Haridevi was heading towards New Delhi’s Nangloi with her husband Shyam Charan, 49, when the incident took place on the Ring Road stretch, near the World Trade Centre in Narouji Nagar.
The Safdarjung Enclave police station received a PCR call about the accident around 3.15 pm.
“On reaching the spot, a woman, riding pillion on a bike, was found injured. Her husband, who was driving the two-wheeler, was unhurt. The woman was rushed to AIIMS by sub-inspector Vishal in a PCR van, where she was declared dead on arrival,” DCP (Southwest) Surender Chaudhary said.
The driver of the garbage truck, which was from the Subhash Nagar Depot, fled the scene, police said. “The driver, later identified as Jaan Mohammad, 34, a resident of Sultanpuri, has been arrested,” DCP Chaudhary said.
The truck hit the bike from behind, leading to the deceased coming under the truck, police said.
The couple, who lives in Gandhi Camp, has five children — two daughters and three sons.
Speaking to the media, Charan said: “If the truck driver had stopped at the right time, she (his wife) would be standing among us.”
Police have registered an FIR under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (culpable homicide) of the BNS at the Safdurjung police station.
