The government had extended the land lease of the Delhi Golf Club till 2050 back in 2012 on the Club’s request. The Club had requested an extension in the lease to bring the Club to international standards as Golf would be part of the Olympic games from 2016, the Housing and Urban Affairs Minister of State Tokhan Sahu told the Lok Sabha on Friday.

The Delhi Golf Club, spread over an area of 179 acres, was established as a municipal course in the early 1930s and was earlier known as Lodhi Golf Club. The lease of the land allotted earlier has been extended from time to time, and the last lease extension was done on 19th July, 2012.

The Minister was replying to Tamil Nadu MP VS Matheswaran who had asked for the rationale for granting the temporary lease to Delhi Golf Club until 2050 back in 2012. He had also asked whether the Government is contemplating the cancellation of temporary lease of Delhi Golf Club as a large portion of the land is leased out at nominal rate without having public interest and not serving the poor people, which the Minister denied.

In response to an earlier question by the same MP, the Minister had told the Lok Sabha on March 27 that the Delhi Golf club had paid Rs. 15.54 crores to the Land and Development Office (L&DO) since 2012 as ground rent and other charges.
