“I remember clearly that even on the day when I was going to take oath as the Chief Minister, I took my husband’s shirt out of the wardrobe,” Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday, adding that whether the wife becomes CM or DM, the household will be managed by her.

Gupta was speaking on the topic “Balance between family and conduct” at an event of Brahmakumaris, a spiritual organisation in Northwest Delhi’s Derawal Nagar. The event was also attended by motivational speaker and spiritual mentor BK Shivani, and Ashok Goel, Model Town MLA.

Women are the axis of the family, who keeps her father, husband, daughter and son together, Gupta said, telling the audience that “the night before Bhai Dooj, I thought I should check the house and set the menu since I had invited all my brothers to my house. That day, I scolded my cook so much for the condition of the kitchen.”

“Our family system is the core axis of our country. It is what has kept the people of this country and its families together. If not for this, we would have also been scattered like any of the Western countries,” Gupta said, emphasising that India is the country in which families stay together the most.

Gupta said that in our country relations between a husband and wife are not just sustained over years, but over lifetimes. “Generations live together in our country with children respecting their parents and parents respecting their parents…It is so joyful to talk about joint families and celebrate golden, silver and platinum jubilees. Families are a source of strength for all,” she underlined.
