Two constables in Ghaziabad were arrested and suspended on Saturday for allegedly plotting to help two prisoners escape from Dasna Jail by posing as personnel on official duty assigned to escort inmates for a court hearing, officers said.

According to police, constables Sachin Kumar and Rahul Kumar, posted at the Ghaziabad Police Lines station, arrived at Dasna Jail around noon on Saturday in a white hatchback bearing a Delhi registration number. It was their personal vehicle. They were dressed in uniform and carried what appeared to be a production warrant, claiming they had been sent to take a prisoner to Noida for a court hearing, officers said.
Upon entering the jail, officers said, the two constables initially insisted on taking only two prisoners—Bijendra and Vansh—even as the warrant listed six prisoners for production that day.

When told that all six would be sent together, the accused continued to insist on taking just the two, police said. A quick verification revealed that no government vehicle or personnel had been sanctioned from the Ghaziabad Police Lines for prisoner production in Gautam Buddh Nagar that day, officers added.

“They were not on duty that day and were not accompanied by a sub-inspector, which is mandatory when escorting prisoners for court hearings,” said ACP Kavi Nagar Bhaskar Verma.

Suspecting foul play, the District Jail Superintendent immediately alerted senior officers. A probe by the Reserve Police Lines soon confirmed that the constables had not been assigned any such duty.

Police said that the constables were conspiring to help the prisoners escape allegedly in exchange for money.

Once the irregularity came to light, the Jail Superintendent refused to release any prisoner, prompting the constables to flee the premises, police said.

Later that evening, Reserve Inspector Chandraman Singh from the Ghaziabad Police Lines filed a complaint at the Kavi Nagar Police Station, leading to the registration of an FIR and the arrest of both constables.

“A case has been registered against both constables for attempting to take the prisoners fraudulently,” said DCP City Dhawal Jaiswal.

“Preliminary inquiry suggests a monetary deal was struck to facilitate the escape,” he added.

Police said Rahul Kumar was posted as a census clerk at the Police Lines, while Sachin Kumar served in the reserve force. Following their arrest, senior officers visited the Police Lines to oversee the internal inquiry.

Officials said efforts are underway to trace other possible accomplices. Police said Vansh, the prisoner at the centre of the conspiracy, is a resident of Bisrakh and had been planning a jail escape for several months.

Vansh has been arrested in multiple cases ranging from theft to attempted murder in both Noida and Ghaziabad, police said. Meanwhile, Bijendra is lodged in jail in connection with a fraud case.
