On Wednesday morning, a mosque at Okhla’s Madanpur Khadar was found desecrated. Next to the mosque, stands a mata ki chowki that has come up in the past month. The similarities with Trilokpuri are obvious but, unlike there, police reaction this time has been prompt.
Police’s version that “all is well” here, however, is not backed by the palpable tension in the area.
Police confirmed that a complaint was received about the incident from local leaders led by the Aam Aadmi Party. “This area is extremely sensitive and what we need now is vigilance and a proper investigation,” Irfanullah Khan, a local AAP leader, said.
Police have deployed additional security at the mosque following the incident. The desecration of the Gausiya mosque at D Block in Madanpur Khadar’s JJ Colony was discovered on Wednesday during the morning prayers.
A member of the mosque’s management committee said, “We immediately informed police, who took prompt action and helped us clean up the area.”
A police complaint in the matter was filed by local leaders from both communities, led by AAP leader Amanatullah. The complaint, filed on Wednesday, alleges that certain “unknown people are attempting to create communal tension in the area for days” and that the incident on Wednesday was only the “most recent example”.
But while the complaint filed by the AAP urges the police to investigate the matter and arrest the culprits, former Congress MLA Mohammed Asif said such arrests could worsen the situation.
“In case arrests are made, there can be a violent reaction. The matter is very sensitive and needs to handled carefully,” he said.
