A 22-year-old chain snatcher, who used to mock his victims after committing the crime, was arrested following a shootout in the Narela Industrial Area, police said on Friday.
The accused, Aftab Alam alias Atti, was injured in the firing by the police team.
According to a senior police officer, a team from the Special Staff received specific information late Thursday night that Aftab, a resident of Bawana, was in the area on a black scooter and was carrying a firearm.
“Based on this information, the Special Staff team laid a trap near G Block of the Narela Industrial Area. Upon spotting the suspect on the black scooter, they attempted to intercept him. However, the suspect opened fire at the police team. In retaliation, the police returned fire to subdue him, during which a bullet struck his right leg,” the officer said.
‘He was taken to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment,” the officer added.
Aftab, according to police, is facing over 9 criminal cases of snatching, robbery and murder.
According to the officer, he is so brazen that he would mock his victims after snatching their chains. In some instances, he even spun the chain on his fingertip in front of the victim after committing the act. By the time the victim tried to catch him, he would already have disappeared.
“Aftab worked alone, but also led a gang of snatchers who frequently clashed with other groups of thieves and criminals over territorial dominance,” the officer said.
The police said the scooter recovered from him is being verified to determine whether it is a stolen vehicle. Once he is discharged from the hospital, he will be taken into custody for further questioning, police said.
