The Gurgaon police lodged an FIR against a leading private bank on Thursday evening for allegedly distributing counterfeit currency notes.

The incident came to light when one Inderjeet Sachdeva,a resident of C-Block in Vasant Kunj,South Delhi, filed a written complaint with the Gurgaon police.

As per the complainant, she withdrew Rs 4.5 lakh in cash from the ICICI Bank’s Vasant Kunj branch on August 8. The next day she deposited Rs 4.15 lakh in her account at SBI’s Gurgaon branch. Later,Sachdeva went to shop at the Ambience Mall in Gurgaon and took Rs 23,000 in cash.

While shopping at Marks & Spencer, when she paid in cash, the person at the counter pointed out that there were counterfeit currencies in the bundle.

The complainant then went to the police and provided details of her transaction and the details of the number printed on the counterfeit currency from the bank. The Gurgaon police have also recovered fake currency notes worth Rs 5,500 from the complainant.

“We are investigating all possible angles to find out who is responsible. It is astonishing how a bank of this reputation could allow circulation of counterfeit notes without proper checking,” said a senior police official who did not wish to be named. The Gurgaon police have registered a case under IPC Section 489B (using as genuine, forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes).
