A priest has been arrested in North West Delhi for strangling his wife and staging it as a suicide, the police said on Sunday. The 11-year-old daughter of the couple was sleeping at the time of the incident, they said.
According to the police, the Keshav Puram police station received a call from the accused, identified as Dinesh Sharma, in the wee hours of Sunday. “On October 26, a call was received at Keshav Puram police station at 1.05 am. The caller said that he had found his wife hanging inside a room in their apartment in Ganeshpura,” DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh said.
When officers reached the spot, they found a woman lying on the floor, who was identified as Sushma Sharma, an officer said. Her husband Dinesh — a priest at a Shiv temple —was sitting beside her body and the couple’s daughter was sleeping in the only bedroom of the apartment.
No satisfactory evidence was found to support the husband’s claim of her suicide, police said. During questioning, Dinesh broke down and confessed to having killed his wife. He told the police that daily squabbles with the wife had triggered him.
“The accused’s younger brother is the owner of the flat. The accused had been living there since the last 12-13 years,” DCP Singh said.
