The Delhi Police have amplified security arrangements at Jantar Mantar, where the wrestlers are staging a protest, and around Delhi’s borders, as farmers in larger numbers are expected to meet the wrestlers on Sunday afternoon to extend support to them.

The police said that security checks and vehicle inspections outside the city will be mandatory for anyone entering the city on Sunday. An additional police force has been deployed at important borders.

The police have amplified security at Jantar Mantar with the help of paramilitary forces. They said that multiple layers of barricades have been installed and round-the-clock surveillance will be done by senior officers with the help of CCTV cameras and body cameras.

Two weeks ago, several farmers who came from Punjab and other states to support the wrestlers were stopped at the borders. A few of them also clashed with the police at Jantar Mantar where they allegedly jumped barricades after being stopped from taking tractors towards the protest site.

The protesters, led by Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat, and Olympic medalists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, among other players, announced that they will take a “big decision” in their protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for his alleged sexual harassment of female grapplers, including a minor. A Khap Mahapanchayat will be held on Sunday afternoon with farmer union leaders and labour unions.

The Delhi Police registered two cases against the WFI chief and his aide in April and they questioned him last week. The statements of the women have also been recorded. No arrests have been made yet.
