In a major infrastructure push, the Delhi government will soon reconstitute the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC) to accelerate the redevelopment of Old Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said after a high-level meeting on Wednesday.
The revamped body will include heritage and conservation experts and will serve as the main agency for implementing revitalisation in the Walled City, a press note from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) noted. Further, Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal also suggested that the name of SRDC be changed.
At the meeting, attended by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood and senior officials, it was noted that the SRDC had remained inactive in recent years, slowing planned improvements in Chandni Chowk.
Officials noted that multiple overlapping agencies have also contributed to delay in reconstituting SRDC.Gupta said the government is committed to restoring the historic character of the area and improving civic facilities. Further, the CM also directed departments to expedite work, including addressing the shortage of women’s toilets by constructing new pink toilets.
