Four people, including a Delhi Police Head Constable, were killed and many others injured in northeast Delhi Monday as violence over Citizenship Amendment Act protests raged on for the second consecutive day. Vehicles were burnt, homes and shops set ablaze, and stones pelted in Maujpur. Incidents of violence and arson were reported in Kardampuri, Chand Bagh and Dayalpur too.
One man, identified as 33-year-old Shahrukh, has been detained for allegedly firing eight rounds in Maujpur’s 66 Foota Road. Two of the deceased have been identified — Head Constable Ratanlal and a civilian, Mohd Furqaan. At least 37 police personnel, including DCP Shahdara, were injured. All of them have been taken to GTB hospital.
Sources in the Home Ministry said the violence “appears to be orchestrated to coincide with the visit of US President Donald Trump”. Union Home secretary Ajay Bhalla said senior officials were on the ground and sufficient forces had been deployed. Trump landed in Delhi on Monday evening.
A bench headed by Justice S Muralidhar of the Delhi High Court has asked the Delhi Police to evacuate all the injured from the hospital in Mustafabad and shift them to better medical institution nearby. In its reply, the Delhi Police told the bench that they have shifted 20 injured from the hospital in Mustafabad to other medical institution.
The court will further hear the petition Wednesday afternoon. Earlier, a forum, consisting of doctors from various government and private hospitals moved Delhi HC late night for police protection while their ambulances head towards providing medical facilities to the people injured in violence at Mustafabad area in the capital.

Facing flak for his speech during a gathering in favour of CAA at Maujpur Chowk in northeast Delhi, BJP leader Kapil Mishra remained defiant on Tuesday saying he was not scared of the "massive hate campaign" against him for "speaking truth" and supporting the amended citizenship law. In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Mishra said that he was being abused and issued "death threats" and stressed that he did not commit any crime by supporting the amended citizenship law. "I have received calls by many to kill me. Many people including politicians and journalists are abusing me. But, I am not scared because I have not done anything wrong," Mishra told PTI. During his pro-CAA demonstration at Maujpur Chow, Mishra had also issued an ultimatum to police to vacate the roads blocked by anti-CAA protesters in Jafarabad and Bhahanpura areas in three days, warning that he will come back on the streets if no action was taken.

The Delhi Minorities Commission on Tuesday appealed to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal for imposition of curfew in violence-affected areas, after 11 people were killed in clashes and arson over the new citizenship law. In a letter to Baijal, DMC chairman Zafarul Islam Khan expressed apprehension that violence may escalate after departure of the visiting US president Donald Trump. "The situation may worsen tomorrow after President Trump leaves tonight. Please treat this as urgent as any delay will result in more loss of lives and damage," Khan said in his letter demanding imposition of curfew in the violence-hit areas.

In wake of violence over CAA protest in the national capital, Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked CBSE to decide at the earliest on rescheduling Wednesday's board exam at one of the centres in the north-east Delhi. The court will hear the matter again on Wednesday morning. The court was hearing a plea by private school, Bhai Parmanand Vidya Mandir at Surya Niketan in East Delhi, and some of its class X and XII students saying the centre allotted to them by the CBSE was 16 km away their school and situated in Chandu Nagar-Karawal Nagar road, one of the violence-hit areas.

Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday wrote a letter to the wife of Delhi Police Head Constable Ratan Lal, who died during clashes over the Citizenship Amendment Act in Northeast Delhi, yesterday. He wrote, "I express grief and deep condolences on untimely death of your husband".
A total of 11 FIRs has been registered in connection with arson in Northeast Delhi. According to the police, the situation is under control as section 144 has been imposed in Delhi. " Sec 144 imposed in the affected areas. Appeal to the people to maintain peace and not to believe in rumors.I appeal to people especially in North East Delhi to not take law in their hands. We are taking the help of drones also. Situation under control," Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa was quoted as saying by ANI.

Condemning the violence in Delhi, the Congress on Tuesday demanded that the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Chief Minister of Delhi come forward to ensure peace and maintain brotherhood while rising above partisan politics. "This is Gandhi, Nehru, Patel's India, can any Indian accept this mindless violence? Congress appeals to the people of Delhi to maintain communal harmony and thwart all attempts of the forces dividing the country on the basis of religion," said Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
Meanwhile, US President Donald, who is in India for his maiden trip said that India has really worked hard on religious freedom.
" We did talk about religious freedom. The PM said he wants people to have religious freedom. They have worked really hard on it. I heard about the individual attacks but I did not discuss it. It is up to India," Trump said while talking about violence over CAA.
As tension smoulders in the city over violence, section 144 has been imposed in parts of Northeast Delhi. So far, violence continues in Maujpur, Gokulpuri, Bhajanpura, Jaffrabad, Chandbagh and Khureji Khas areas. Earlier in the rioters damaged two fire tenders in Gokulpuri and crowds raising incendiary slogans set on fire a bike in the epicentre of the trouble Maujpur. Stone pelting reported again at Khajoori Khas in North East Delhi, nearly two kilometers away from Bhajanpura chowk where violence is still on and a petrol pump in Bhajanpura was allegedly set ablaze on Monday night.
Urging everyone to maintain peace and order, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal said, "both chief minister and I want that peace and harmony should remain intact in Delhi. We should do everything possible to maintain peace and order. We should also help Police in this."
The Supreme Court Tuesday agreed to hear a petition filed by former Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah and others seeking lodging of FIRs over the recent violence in Delhi over the amended citizenship law. The hearing will take place tomorrow. The plea was mentioned for urgent listing before a bench of Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph. In the application, Wajahat Habibullah, Bhim Army chief Chandrasekhar Azad, and social activist Bahadur Abbas Naqvi have also sought a direction to authorities to ensure the safety of women sitting on protest against the CAA at Shaheen Bagh and other places in the national capital. The Delhi High Court agreed to hear an NGO's plea Wednesday, seeking registration of FIR against three BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Pravesh Verma in the violence that erupted in Northeast Delhi over CAA. The plea sought direction to preserve the CCTV footage of the area concerned. The petition for urgent hearing was mentioned before a bench headed by Justice G S Sistani.

An NGO on Tuesday approached the Delhi High Court seeking registration of an FIR and arrest of persons involved in the ongoing violence in northeast Delhi over the Citizenship Amendment Act, PTI reported. The petition, which is likely to be mentioned before the high court, also seeks setting up of an SIT to inquire into the incident and compensation for those killed and injured in the violence.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday said, 'MLAs of the affected areas informed me that there is a severe shortage of police force and police can't take action till they receive orders from the top. I have also asked District Magistrates to take out peace march with police in these areas.' He further told ANI that the hospital authorities have been asked to be prepared and provide quality medical aid to the injured coming there. 'Fire department has been asked to coordinate with Police and reach the affected areas on time.', he said. Kejriwal also added that the MLAs of the border areas have said that people are coming from outside. 'There is a need to seal the borders and do preventive arrests.'

He, along with several other locals, have taken it on themselves to man a stretch of road separating protesters from two communities. “Our shops have been burnt. The Delhi government Monday ordered all private and government schools in the violence-affected Northeast Delhi district to remain shut on Tuesday, as reports of stone-pelting and arson streamed well into Monday night. Internal examinations in government schools have also been postponed. “Internal exams will not be held in schools in the violence-affected Northeast Delhi district. All private and government schools will remain shut. I have spoken to HRD minister Dr R P Nishank and requested that board exams in this area be suspended,” Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted. Read more here
