Two weeks after a Nigerian national was beaten up by a group of people who branded him a thief, police in Malviya Nagar said they became aware of the attack only after videos of the incident went viral on Monday. Police also claimed that immediately after the attack, the man “did not say he had been beaten up by the mob”. DCP (south) Ishwar Singh said beating is “unacceptable in any civil society”.
“We registered the case as soon as we verified the video, which went viral on Monday. One of the accused, Krishan Kumar, has been arrested while three others have been identified,” the DCP said. Singh also claimed that Ahmad never told police or the doctors that he had been beaten up by the mob.
“A PCR call was received around 4.10 am on the day of the incident. When local police reached the spot, Ahmad was bleeding. Residents told us that while fleeing the spot, he fell on the ground and suffered injuries to his head and body. Instead of telling us that he was beaten up, he hid the fact. He did not share any details except his name and the country he comes from. As soon he revealed that he is a Nigerian national, we informed the Nigerian embassy,” DCP Singh added.

Sources said police have not been able to trace his Delhi address so far or recover his passport. “Initially, he told us he lives in Chhatarpur. The police team kept moving with him in Chhatarpur, but then he said he lives in Lajpat Nagar. However, he couldn’t take the team to his home,” a police officer claimed.
Local police took him to AIIMS, where his medical examination was conducted. He was provided first-aid before being produced in court and sent to judicial custody.
