Sixty-one new SUVs have been added to the Delhi Police fleet and distributed to Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) posted across various units of the force for official use, according to an official source.

Most of these officers belong to the DANIPS (Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service) cadre and have been promoted to the rank of IPS.

The vehicles — Mahindra Scorpio-N — were purchased last month.

Currently, the Delhi Police has eight different kinds of four wheelers — Tata Safari, Toyota Innova and Fortuner, Mahindra Scorpio and Bolero, Maruti Ertiga and Ciaz and Gypsy.

The Innova, Ertiga and Bolero are used in the Police Control Room (PCR) unit. Fortuners are used for jammer systems and in VIP convoys. Ciaz and Ertiga are used by ACP- and DCP-level officers, while the new Tata Safari model is given to district DCPs, Special Commissioners and the Police Chief.

“The procurement of Gypsies has been stopped since 2018. We induct new vehicles into the force based on demand. This time, we bought 61 SUVs of the Scorpio-N model for DCPs to commute,” a senior police officer told The Indian Express.

The last big chunk of vehicles — around 850 cars — was purchased during the G20 Summit in 2023. These vehicles were Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Mahindra Scorpio, Toyota Innova and Mahindra Bolero Neo. Of these, 400 were given to the PCR unit.

“Buying and disposing of used vehicles is an ongoing process. Once it completes its age, it gets auctioned via an online process. The lifespan of a petrol- or diesel-run four-wheeler in the Delhi Police is either 1.5 lakh km or six-and-a-half years, whichever comes first,” the officer said.

The Delhi Police, nearly a 1 lakh strong force, has around 10,000 vehicles, which include trucks, four-wheelers and two-wheelers.

Officers like the new Scorpio N because it is compatible with Delhi’s streets, the senior police officer said.
