A 17-year-old pregnant girl in Delhi’s Bawana allegedly died by suicide earlier this week, the police said on Thursday, adding that they were on the lookout for her former live-in partner, who is absconding.

The incident took place on Monday, and the girl was alone at her elder sister’s house at the time, the police said. The minor was allegedly eight weeks pregnant and had frequent altercations with her former live-in partner, who is around 22-23 years old, the police added.

The minor’s former partner was booked on Monday under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 7 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on charges of abetment to suicide and sexual assault.

According to the police, the girl’s family and her live-in partner, who is around 22-23 years old, were from the same area in Bihar. The man frequently visited the girl’s sister’s house while she was staying there. “They soon started a relationship, and soon after that, the two moved in together. The girl’s family was aware of this relationship,” Hareshwar Swami, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Outer North, said.

In her statement to the police, the victim’s elder sister said the man was abusive and often physically violent towards the minor.

“After a while, her family decided to take her back to their native place in Bihar. The man followed to convince the girl’s family to bring her back,” said DCP Swami. When the girl returned, his abusive behaviour continued, the police said.

On Monday, the girl’s sister was away at work in a factory in Bawana when she allegedly died by suicide. Passersby rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she was declared dead.
