In one of the biggest upsets — among several — for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) this Delhi Assembly election, three-time MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia lost to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah — by 675 votes.
Sisodia, who switched seats from Patparganj to Jangpura this time, conceded defeat and expressed the hope that the BJP would work for the welfare of the people in the area. “I extend my congratulations to the winning candidate and hope they will focus on the progress and welfare of the people of Jangpura,” he told reporters.
Marwah was a long-time Congress leader and three-time MLA from Jangpura before he switched to the BJP. In 2022, he complained of not getting time with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi for a meeting. Later the same year, he joined the BJP. Speaking at the BJP headquarters soon after, he took swipes at the senior Congress leadership, referring to Rahul Gandhi as ‘raja’ and Sonia Gandhi as ‘maharani’.
According to his affidavit filed with the Election Commission, Marwah owns a business and has several rental properties. He has 13 commercial and 12 residential buildings under his name and that of his wife Surinderpal Kaur Marwah.
He has one pending criminal case against him.
He is a college dropout; He studied at PGDAV College, Delhi University, till his first year.
In 2024, Marwah saw his share of controversies when Congress filed a complaint against him with the Delhi Police. The complaint mentioned him and stated that he “openly issued assassination threats against Gandhi” on September 11. According to the complaint, Marwah had said that if Rahul Gandhi doesn’t mend his ways, he will meet the same fate as his grandmother Indira Gandhi.
In 2021, a Delhi court acquitted Marwah and former BJP MLA OP Sharma in a case of allegedly assaulting former CPI member Ameeque Jamai outside Patiala House Courts premises in February 2016.
