A 68-year-old man was arrested Tuesday and sent to judicial custody for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl, one of his neighbours, in April. What brought the case to light was a video of the alleged act that the son of the accused ended up recording in his mobile camera that he had secretly set up following suspicion that his father was into “black magic”, said police.
The 40-year-old son of the accused sent the video to the father of the victim who approached the police. Police have also booked the son under IT Act, and a neighbour who had allegedly advised the victim’s father against filing a police complaint.
A senior police officer said the incident took place between April 20 and 30. “The families of the accused and that of the victim were very close…the accused used to frequently sexually harass her in the past. On the day in question, he called the victim to his house on some pretext and raped her inside one of the rooms,” said the officer.
The victim did not reveal the incident to any of her family members. “However, the victim’s father, around 11 am on Tuesday, received a video from an unknown number showing her daughter being allegedly sexually assaulted by the accused,” the officer said. Following this, the father approached the police and a case under IPC sections pertaining to sexual assault and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) was lodged and the accused arrested from his house.
A senior police officer said, “We are interrogating the son of the accused who sent the video to the victim’s father…he told us that he was annoyed over his father’s “suspicious activities” and suspected that he did black magic inside the house…he fixed a mobile in one corner of the room and hid it carefully with a cloth so that his father could not spot it while he was inside.”
Weeks later, the son of the accused stumbled upon the video while browsing his phone and realised that the minor girl was his neighbour. He immediately sent the footage to her father, said police. “The wife of the accused had died several years ago and he used to live with his unmarried son…though the son had fixed the phone inside the house for a different purpose, so as to check whether his father performed black magic or not, we have still booked him under the IT Act for shooting and sending the video to the victim’s father…,” said an officer. Police said they have also booked a person under IPC sections pertaining to criminal intimidation after he allegedly tried to dissuade the parents of the victim from approaching the police in the case.
