Viewing the prevailing situation in the capital as “unprecedented” following the summons issued to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning in the alleged excise policy scam, the Delhi Legislative Assembly will convene for a one-day session to discuss the “state and challenges faced by democracy” Monday.

“The situation in Delhi today is unprecedented. That the biggest ‘panchayat’ of Delhi, the temple of its democracy, will not discuss this is not possible. This official discussion among MLAs from different constituencies is the discussion of the people and is very important. This is why the session has been called,” said AAP Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj.

“There are many big opposition parties, we are small players. The PM has gone beyond all maan-maryada and is going after Arvind Kejriwal… Many opposition leaders have called the CM, many called Sanjay Singh… They all said that they had never seen the Centre trying to arrest a CM like this before and are worried at the challenge to democracy this is,” he added.

Alleging that it was illegal and a misuse of the city’s legislature, Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, however, sought L-G VK Saxena’s intervention in the matter and demanded that it be disallowed.

“The Assembly was formed to consider the problems of Delhi and to make plans for the development of Delhi and the welfare of the people, but over the last eight years, AAP has used it only for its political interests,” the LOP alleged.

As per the Rule 61 of its rule book, Bidhuri added, only those subjects can be raised in it which fall under the purview of the Delhi government.

“The AAP government discusses such subjects which do not come under the Delhi government. Even a resolution is presented in the House, criticising the Prime Minister and the Centre, which is completely unconstitutional. Not only this, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his party also use indecent and disrespectful language,” Bidhuri alleged.
