Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP’s) JNU unit vice-president Jatin Goraya resigned from his post Friday, saying he was “tired” of the ABVP’s stand on the attacks against Dalits.
Goraya was one of the students who had burned pages from the ‘Manusmriti’ on the university campus, during a protest against “anti-Dalit and anti-women” tenets of the ancient text, months ago.
“I have had differences with the ABVP for a while. They did not take a stand on the Rohith Vemula issue and refused to say anything about the recent incidents against Dalits. I decided to take a stand before the upcoming JNUSU elections,” said Goraya.
In February, then ABVP JNU Unit joint secretary Pradeep Narwal and two others had resigned from their posts, following clashes in the university campus over the February 9 incident.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Goraya said he had not taken any decisions on joining another political organisation for now, but there were “many people who are not satisfied with either the right or the left.”
He added that his resignation was a “tribute to the principles of Rohith Vemula.”
