Jaitley enters DU debate, says defer 4-year format

In letter to HRD Minister, says not enough debate on switch.

Days after Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel came out in support of Delhi University’s four-year undergraduate programme, senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha,Arun Jaitley said the programme should be deferred and changes discussed extensively before implementation. Earlier,Goel had announced a call centre to help students during DU’s admission process.

In a letter to Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister M M Pallam Raju on June 4,Jaitley suggested that the FYUP should be analysed further.

“I am of the opinion that the introduction of this course should be deferred for some time and extensive discussion be held amongst the academic community before the switchover decision is implemented,” Jaitley wrote.

According to Jaitley, delegations from DU’s teaching staff had met him and put forward their reservations against the format.

In his letter,Jaitley said adequate and extensive discussion within the university had not been held and that the curriculum had not been discussed.

“The impact of a three-year course becoming a four-year course in terms of the socio-economic realities of India has not been factored. It has not been discussed why the switch to the FYUP is for one university and does not apply to the other universities,” Jaitley wrote.

But his party’s state unit chief, while launching a booklet on DU admissions, had supported the FYUP. Goel had even announced that the party would start a call centre for those who have queries regarding admissions.
