Five injured in celebratory firing during wedding

Five persons were injured in celebratory firing during a wedding ceremony in outer Delhi’s Alipur area Thursday night.

Five persons were injured in celebratory firing during a wedding ceremony in outer Delhi’s Alipur area Thursday night, said police. Police arrested Vikas Kumar, a retired army man, for opening fire and booked him under attempt to murder charge.

Kumar, resident of Sonipat, Haryana, was allegedly drunk when he pulled out a shot gun and fired twice in the air when people were dancing at about 10.30 pm outside a farmhouse, said a police officer. Soon after, he pointed the gun towards the ground and fired again, added the officer.

Two persons from the groom’s side, identified as Shekhar Tyagi and Pankaj, received pellet injuries in their legs. The three others injured — Sartaj, Bablu and Teekam — were members of the music band, said police. The music band members too suffered injuries on their legs, added the police. The injured were admitted to hospital.

Kumar tried to run away but was caught by the other guests. The groom’s family had come from Sonipat, while the bride was from Delhi’s Rohini. They had booked the farmhouse for the wedding, said police.

Police have also booked the owner of the farmhouse for allowing persons to enter with weapons. Police have seized Kumar’s gun and are verifying its licence.

Sources said Delhi Police have issued an advisory to farmhouses and guest houses not to allow persons carrying weapons inside during celebrations.
