‘Ran towards the site… began pulling bodies out of the cars’: First responders recall horror after Red Fort blast

Recounting the seconds before the blast, he added, “The car was moving slowly along… the area was heavily jammed with traffic when the blast happened.”

Dharminder was among several passersby and locals who rushed to help following the blast that left nine dead and several injured.

Mohsin Ali, one of the rescuers said, “As soon as the blast occurred, the car went up in pieces. There was a large crowd and people started running around. I saw people on the road with their legs split open and injuries to their hands and other parts of the body. I picked up an injured girl and placed her in an autorickshaw so that she could be rushed to the hospital.”

Dilshad Alam, a food stall owner near Meena Bazar, said that it felt like a cylinder blast. He said he immediately rushed to Red Fort and, with the help of e-rickshaw drivers, took two injured men and two children to Lok Nayak Hospital.

According to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, a slow-moving vehicle stopped at the red light near the Gate No.1 of Red Fort Metro Station following which an explosion took place at 6.52 pm. Two to three people were seated inside the car, he told mediapersons.

“The explosion affected surrounding vehicles. As soon as we were informed, we notified all agencies concerned — Delhi Police, FSL, NIA and NSG. Their teams have arrived and are monitoring the situation. They are investigating the cause behind the explosion,” he said.
