Elsewhere in city,pheku posters start new Cong-BJP fight

As BJP workers packed the Rohini park to listen to Modi,small groups came out on the streets elsewhere in the city,staging anti-Modi protests.

The Paramjit Singh Sarna-led Shiromani Akali Dal,which lost control of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee to the Badal group earlier this year,protested the Gujarat government’s decision to evict Sikh farmers from Kutch. “Modi is trying to take away from Punjabi farmers what is theirs. We had said that if he stepped inside Delhi,we will protest against him. So,here we are,” Sarna said.

Young men,straddling scooters and motorcycles,travelled the length of the city the entire afternoon as part of the Samarthan Rally organised by the Congress. “Delhi rejects Modi’s communal politics and his rally. The city believes in development. That is the model the Congress government has stood for,which is why Delhi will vote for Congress this time too,” Congress MLA Mukesh Sharma said.

Jantar Mantar saw music,art,humour and poetry being used as tools of protest. Artists disapproved what they called “the idea of communal politics epitomised by Narendra Modi”.

“When we were told that the BJP was going to put up 100 screens for the rally,we thought that there should be an alternative voice too. It’s important to debunk the myth of Narendra Modi,and we are here to do just that,” Nikhil Vasudevan,member of Delhi-based band The Ska Vengers,said.
