DTC buses to once again display advertisements for revenue

Bus wraps of other countries will also be studied to ensure that such advertisements are also used to display “socially relevant messages”.

The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will soon adorn their fleet of 5000-odd buses with “interesting wraps” to earn revenue through advertising. Bus wraps of other countries will also be studied to ensure that such advertisements are also used to display “socially relevant messages”, officials said.

“Such wraps were there on our old buses but then the government stopped it saying that they made buses look shabby. But a recent transport department order has allowed the display of advertisements on public service vehicles. Hence, we are going ahead with the move,” an official said.

As per the guidelines issued by the transport department, only those public service vehicles having GPS/GPRS system installed in the vehicles will be allowed to display advertisements. The vehicle owner will also be responsible for the content of any advertisement displayed on or inside the vehicle.

The wraps will be around the external body of DTC buses. “Such advertisements will also be displayed inside the buses – behind passenger seats and on panels which are there on some buses. LCD screens will also be put up in buses and government advertisements will be shown on them…,” the official aid.

To earn more non-tariff revenue through advertisements, DTC is also going to put up unipoles in its depots. “We will also allow wall wraps on our depot walls…We have already floated tenders for this. While we have 46 depots, we will start with a pilot project where advertising unipoles will be installed in seven depots.’’

The measures come in the wake of the corporation trying to plug operational costs and improve their revenue collection.
