Amid G20 summit buzz, here’s what Delhiites think about langur cut-outs, capital’s beautification and more

From "langur cutout to keep monkeys at bay" to "Delhi beautified to attract tourists", people guessed differently.

The national capital has been decked up to welcome foreign delegates for the G20 Summit this week. The two-day summit will commence on September 9 at the Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan.

Meanwhile, what grabbed the attention of the public is the life-size cutouts of langurs installed at various places in Delhi. The measure taken by the officials to curb nuisance by the smaller rhesus monkeys during the summit has evoked curiosity and laughter among many. The Indian Express‘ Chitral Khambati took to the streets of Delhi to record people’s reaction and came across vivid responses over the langur cutout and beautification of Delhi.

From “langur cutout to keep monkeys at bay” to “Delhi beautified to attract tourists”, people made unique guesses. Speaking to indianexpress.com, Pappu Kumar said, “Langurs cause lot of menace and there has been a little respite from langurs after the installation of the cutout.”

Neeraj Rajora said, “People find monkeys troublesome and the langur’s poster may keep monkeys at bay. In apartment and office premises, those who handle langurs are hired for safety purposes and monkeys move away after seeing the langur.”

Regarding the G-20 Summit, he said, “This is happening in the country for the first time, which gives an oppourtunity to move forward. We have witnessed lockdown and things have opened up now. However, businesses have not flourished much in the corporate sector, which will in turn affect businesses in local areas. G20 will promote business and each person will be benefitted.”

While some others were clueless on why the city has been decked up, few remained uninhibited to imagine. Raghav said, “A lot of tourists arrive in Delhi and they will feel good after seeing this. Delhi will be more beautified with these decorations.” Another man said Connaught place, Red Fort have been decked up and may be “the leaders” are coming to roam around in India.

Most of the school students were oblivious to the reason behind the decorations.

However, one of the students, Kunal, said that its for G-20 adding that Delhi is going to shut down for three days after Janmashtami.

When asked about the langur cutout, Chetan Jain could not resist but mimick the sound of a langur. He said, “Monkeys are afraid of langurs and they may not come further after spotting the poster. I don’t know if it will work or not. The best thing is that there will be three holidays.”

About G 20 summit, Jain pointed out that daily wage workers will be adversely impacted. “It will a problem for daily wage labourers. Those working on the streets and earn their livelihood might find it difficult. The government needs to find a solution for them,” he said.

Chelsea said, “Its because of G20 Summit. There will be international economic discussion… they’ll talk about more economic growth and how they can develop the economy and architecture.”
